Reindeer Herder Tour – Become a Herder for a Day
Join us for an authentic experience in the heart of Lapland — a chance to step into the everyday life of a Sámi reindeer herder. This full day tour allows you to experience Sami culture first hand, meet and learn about reindeer and immerse yourself in the remote wilderness of Swedish Lapland. During an exciting sled ride, you get to experience what it is like to live and work with reindeers.
The adventure begins with a scenic drive of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, taking you from urban life into the stunning old-growth forest nature reserve of the Torneträsk-Soppero mountains. During the transfer you have good chances of seeing moose and other Arctic animals. Once you arrive at our remote home, you will have the chance to meet a reindeer herder and actively participate in our real life. Journey through the beautiful winter landscape while sitting in a comfortable sled being pulled by a reindeer. You will learn about reindeer herding – a traditional Sami occupation and actively participate in feeding the herd. This is an invitation to be part of an ancient tradition, where you quickly find yourself in a completely different environment where the reindeer are at the center of life.

The Reindeer Herder Tour is a comprehensive, full day experience designed for total immersion into the Sámi lifestyle. After your time spent herding and sledding, we gather around the open fire in the lávvu (Sámi tent) to enjoy a traditional dinner. Now is the time to relax, warm up and listen to stories of life in the heart of Lapland. The food includes exclusive fried smoked reindeer meat with pita bread, served alongside blueberry and lingonberry drink, coffee, and tea. Your stay here is intended to be memorable, restful, and give you a profound understanding of the region’s heritage.
Essential Booking and Tour Logistics
This Reindeer Herder Tour is a 7-hour commitment, running daily from December through April. It is recommended for guests aged 6 years and up. The price is fully inclusive: a knowledgeable guide stays with you from pick-up to drop-off; all transfers (approx. 1 hour 15 minutes one way, offering a great chance to see Arctic animals like moose) are included; and you are provided with necessary warm winter clothes and shoes. We recommend bringing your own warm winter hat and gloves. Food is traditional Sámi fare, and we require that all food allergies or intolerances are informed to us at the time of booking to ensure we can provide a safe and delicious meal.
